Requirements Management Tool Study in the 2020 Era

We’ve been doing requirements work for our customers for over 20 years now. As you can imagine, we have used a variety of technology platforms to manage requirements over the years. Some are terrible (Word). Some are ok (Jira). And some are excellent (ha, nice try and no, I’m not going to name it that easily).

The point is that each organization has different requirements for a requirements management tool. Some care about traceability. Some care about visualization. Some want to link visual models to requirements in a traceable way for compliance. Others want to get the bare minimum on “paper” so their development team can rapidly iterate on building solutions.

Over the years, we took all of that knowledge to run some formal requirements management tool studies. We did one in 2007, another in 2001, and yet another in 2016. We haven’t done one since because frankly, our customers have settled into their choice technology. However, there is some information that can still be helpful to you, if you are needing a solution!

You can read our summary of our results on the latest study here

However, what I think much more useful in today’s world is a kickstarter for what criteria to consider when picking a solution. You can download our original criteria list and scoring system here, and it’s in Excel, so you can manipulate it and make it your own. You can add your own criteria, delete the ones you don’t care about, and score platforms today for your needs.

I’d welcome you sharing the results back and we can publish them in the study. The key is we are unbiased here, so we don’t want tool vendors scoring themselves; we want people who use them to tell us how they perform against criteria (yours or ours!). Please reach out if you have any thoughts!
