Title: How to Use Business Data Diagrams to Derive Use Cases and UAT Scenarios
Summary: Most Business Analysts have at least a passing familiarity with Entity Relationship Diagrams, or ERD’s, and their use by DBAs and Data Architects to model logical and physical data models. One level of abstraction above the ERD is the Business Data Diagram or BDD—an important tool in the Business Analyst’s toolkit. The key difference between the ERD and the BDD is that BDDs are not intended to represent either the logical or physical relationships in a database, but they are a representation of the relationships between various business entities. In this presentation, we’ll briefly explore how to elicit, create, and validate Business Data Diagrams, then discuss how to use BDDs to derive Use Cases and UAT Scenarios.

Presenter’s Bio: James Hulgan is a Senior Product Manager at ArgonDigital, an Austin-based consulting firm which specializes in software requirements. During his time at ArgonDigital, James has helped companies create successful IT projects by helping them define and use business objectives to drive software requirements. Additionally, he trains ArgonDigital’s current generation of software requirements experts on requirements methodology, elicitation, and modeling. James has experiencing managing requirements and driving project success for companies in a variety of industries and corporate functions, including healthcare IT, manufacturing, and sales and marketing. He holds a B.A. in philosophy and English from Texas State University and an M.A. in philosophy from the University of Houston.
